First, what a key actually is
There are three reliable ways to learn how to find the key of a song: by ear with an instrument, by reading the chords, or with an analyzer. All three work, and each one teaches you something the others skip.
A key is a home base. One note, called the tonic, is the note the song keeps leaning back toward, and the scale built on that note supplies most of the melody and chords. There are 12 major keys and 12 minor keys, and nearly every song you know lives in one of them, or moves between a couple. When a phrase ends and the music feels settled, that is the tonic doing its job.
Knowing the key pays off in practical ways: transposing a song to fit a voice, mixing two tracks without clashing, or picking the right scale for a melody. We will get to all three at the end.
Method 1: find the tonic by ear
Play the song and hum the note that feels like the ending. Not the last note you hear, but the note the whole song seems to want to come back to. For most songs it shows up at the end of big phrases and in the bassline at section changes. Once you can hum it, find that note on a keyboard or guitar by hunting one note at a time until it matches.
That gives you the tonic. To decide between major and minor, play a major chord and a minor chord on that root and hear which one agrees with the song. Or test the third: if the note four semitones above the tonic fits, you are in major; if the note three semitones above fits, you are in minor.
Honest caveat: this takes a few tries when you are new to it. Basslines are your friend, because bass players land on the tonic constantly. Songs that never quite settle, or that change key partway through, will fight you. That is normal.
Method 2: read the chords
If you have a chord chart, you can often find the key without playing a note. The first chord and the last chord are frequently the tonic chord, and the last one is the more reliable of the two.
Next, look at the whole set of chords. G, C, D, and E minor point at G major, because those chords all live in that key. The chord that pulls hardest back toward home helps too: a D or D7 that keeps resolving to G is the classic giveaway that G is the tonic.
One catch: every major key shares its chords with a relative minor key. C major and A minor use the same seven notes, so they generate the same chords, and the chart alone cannot always tell you which of the two is home. The ear check from method one settles it. Keep that pair in mind, because it also explains the most common analyzer mistake.
Method 3: drop it into an analyzer

An analyzer looks at which pitches dominate the track and matches them against key profiles. That is usually right, and it is a real time saver when you have a folder of tracks to sort. It is still an estimate. If a result seems off, hum the tonic and check it against the reported key before you build anything on it.

The Camelot wheel, and the relative major/minor trap
The Camelot wheel is a DJ notation for key compatibility. Every key gets a number from 1 to 12 plus a letter: A for minor, B for major. Keys that sit next to each other on the wheel share most of their notes, so a DJ can move from 8A to 7A, 9A, or 8B and the overlap keeps the blend from clashing. No theory required mid-set, just compare codes.
Here is where the relative pair comes back. 8A is A minor and 8B is C major: same seven notes, same number, different letter. Because analyzers judge by pitch content, and the pitch content of a relative pair is identical, a tool will sometimes label a minor song with its relative major, or the other way around. The difference is not in the notes but in which note feels like home, and that is exactly the part software finds hardest to hear.
For harmonic mixing this mislabel barely matters, since same-number keys are compatible anyway. For transposing or writing it matters a lot, so let your ear make the final major-or-minor call.
What to do with the key once you know it
Transpose. If a song sits two semitones above a comfortable singing range, shift it down two. One note on that: publishing a shifted edit of someone else's song generally needs permission from the rights holders, while shifting it for your own practice is a different matter.
Mix harmonically. Label your library with keys and Camelot codes, then build sets by moving between matching or neighboring codes. Long blends stop being a gamble.

That is the whole skill: find home, confirm major or minor, then put it to work. The ear methods make you a better musician, the analyzer makes you a faster one, and nothing stops you from using both on the same song.
