How the bass boost works
The booster raises the low end of the song by the amount you choose while the mids and highs stay where they were. Before the boost it lowers the overall level a little to make room, and after it a limiter catches any peaks that would otherwise clip. That is the difference between a clean boost and the crackly, distorted bass you get from simply dragging an equalizer slider up.
Pick the focus to match what the song needs. Punchy, the default, fills out kicks and bass lines and translates to most headphones. Deep sub concentrates on the rumble at the very bottom, the part you feel more than hear, great for hip-hop and electronic music on a good system. Warm boosts around 160 Hz instead, adding body to thin recordings and voices, and it is the setting that still comes through on phone and laptop speakers.
Why your bass sounds weak in the first place
Small speakers physically cannot move enough air to reproduce deep bass, so a song mixed on big studio monitors can sound thin on a phone. Low bitrate files and phone recordings lose low end too. Boosting helps, but it cannot make a speaker play frequencies it is unable to reproduce: if a phone speaker rolls off below 150 Hz, a deep sub boost will not reach it, while the Warm setting will.
Get the best result
Start with Light or Medium and go heavier only if you need to. A heavy boost on a track that is already loud and bass heavy makes the limiter work hard and can flatten the punch you were after. Export WAV if you plan to edit or master the result, MP3 if it is going straight into a playlist. Bass booster: common questions
Will boosting the bass distort my song?
Not with these settings. The tool lowers the level slightly before boosting and runs a limiter afterwards, so peaks are caught before they clip. A heavy boost on a song that is already very bass heavy can still sound squashed, so start with Light or Medium.
How many dB of bass boost should I use?
For most songs, Medium, plus 8 dB, is plenty. Light, plus 4 dB, is a subtle lift that suits tracks that are already balanced. Heavy, plus 12 dB, is for thin recordings or when you want a deliberately exaggerated low end.
What frequency is bass?
Roughly 20 to 250 Hz. Sub bass, below about 60 Hz, is the rumble you feel. The punch of kicks and bass lines sits around 60 to 150 Hz. Above that, up to about 250 Hz, is the warmth and body of instruments and voices.
Can I boost the bass for phone speakers or earbuds?
Yes. Choose the Warm focus, which boosts around 160 Hz. Small speakers and many earbuds cannot reproduce the deepest frequencies, so a boost where they can actually play is the one you will hear.
Can I make a bass boosted version of a song for my car?
Yes. Pick Punchy or Deep sub, since car systems and subwoofers reproduce low bass well, and export WAV or MP3 at 320 kbps. Start at Medium: a car cabin naturally adds low end, so Heavy can turn boomy quickly.
