Boost or normalize: which one you need
Boosting raises the whole file by a fixed amount, then a limiter catches the peaks so nothing clips. It is the quick fix for a voice memo, lecture, or recording that is simply too quiet. Normalizing measures how loud the file actually sounds, on the same LUFS loudness scale streaming services use, and adjusts it to hit a target. It is the better choice when you want several files to play at a consistent level.
Spotify and YouTube play music at roughly -14 LUFS, so normalizing a track there previews how it will sit next to everything else on those platforms. Podcasts commonly aim for -16 LUFS. Normalizing takes two passes: the first measures your file, the second applies one clean gain change, so the dynamics of the recording are kept intact wherever the peaks allow it.
Why louder is not always better
Past a certain point, extra volume costs punch and clarity. A limiter can only make audio louder by shaving off its peaks, and push it too far and drums lose their snap while vocals start to sound flat and tiring. For music, streaming platforms turn overly loud tracks back down anyway, so squashing a song far beyond -14 LUFS buys you nothing there. For quiet speech, though, a solid boost is exactly what you want.

How do I make an MP3 louder?

What is LUFS?
Loudness Units relative to Full Scale, a measurement of how loud audio sounds to people rather than how high its peaks are. It is the standard streaming services and broadcasters use: Spotify and YouTube play music at about -14 LUFS, and many podcasts aim for -16 LUFS.
Will making audio louder distort it?
Not with these settings. The boost modes run a limiter after the gain change, and the normalize modes keep peaks under -1 dB true peak, so the file does not clip. A very large boost on audio that is already loud can still sound squashed, so use the smallest boost that does the job.
Should I normalize or boost?
Normalize when you want files to match a standard loudness, like preparing music for streaming or evening out podcast episodes. Boost when something is simply too quiet, like a voice memo or a lecture recording, and you want it louder fast.
