The name stuck, even though the eight dimensions part is pure marketing.

Under the hood it is mostly two familiar studio tricks. Panning moves the sound between your left and right ears, here in a smooth, continuous circle. Reverb wraps a sense of space around it, so the song feels like it is happening in a room around you instead of inside your head. Some editors add small delay or EQ changes on top. None of it is new. 8D audio vs binaural and spatial audio

8D often gets confused with two related ideas. Binaural recordings are made with two microphones placed like ears, sometimes inside a dummy head, so tiny differences in timing and tone between your ears let you hear sounds in front, behind, and above you. Spatial audio formats like Dolby Atmos go further: they place individual instruments in a 3D space, then render that space for your headphones.

The source song matters too. The effect is easiest to follow on tracks with a strong lead vocal and a simple arrangement, because your ears can lock onto one clear sound as it moves. Why 8D audio needs headphones

The effect depends on each ear hearing something different. Headphones and earbuds send the left and right channels straight to separate ears, so the motion is obvious.
