OPUS vs MP3: An Honest Comparison

Opus beats MP3 on quality per bit, dramatically at low bitrates. MP3 plays on everything. The right call is a compatibility decision, not a loyalty test.

OPUS vs MP3: the short answer

OPUS vs MP3 comes down to a single tradeoff: efficiency against compatibility. Opus wins on quality at any given bitrate, sometimes dramatically, and it is already the format behind WhatsApp voice notes and Discord voice chat. MP3 wins on one thing, and it is a big thing: it plays absolutely everywhere. Neither answer is wrong. This is not a religious war, it is a compatibility decision. Frame it that way and the right choice for any given file takes about five seconds.

The practical rule, up front: keep Opus for apps and platforms that speak it, and convert to MP3 for the gear that does not. The rest of this post is the reasoning, the numbers, and how to do the conversion in your browser when you need to.

Where Opus wins: quality per bit

Opus is the younger, smarter codec, and it outperforms MP3 at the same bitrate. The gap widens as the bitrate drops. At high bitrates both formats sound good and most people would struggle to tell them apart. At the rates voice apps actually use, often 16 to 32 kbps, the difference stops being subtle: Opus stays clear and intelligible while MP3 degrades badly. That is why WhatsApp voice notes are .opus files (Opus audio in an Ogg container) and why Discord uses the same codec for voice. When engineers control both ends of the pipe and get to pick a format on merit, they pick Opus.

It also handles speech and music equally well, where older low-bitrate codecs forced a choice. A voice memo and a song can go through the same encoder and both come out sounding like themselves. And Opus is an open standard, free for anyone to build on, which removed the last excuse not to adopt it.

Where MP3 wins: it plays everywhere

MP3 is over thirty years old, and that age is its superpower. Every car stereo, every cheap Bluetooth speaker, every standalone music player, every editing program, every locked-down office laptop: they all play MP3 without complaint. Opus does not have that reach. Older car stereos reject it. Dedicated MP3 players reject it. Some Windows programs will not open it, and many transcription tools refuse it outright even though the speech inside is perfectly usable.

So MP3's advantage is not efficiency, and nobody serious claims it is. Its advantage is certainty. When you are about to hand a file to a device or a person whose setup you do not know, never having to wonder whether it will play is worth more than a quality edge you might not even hear at high bitrates.

The practical rule, applied to real files

Keep Opus wherever it already works: browsers, Discord, modern phone apps, anything built in the last decade. Convert to MP3 when the destination is a car stereo, an old music player, a transcription tool, a Windows program that shrugs at the file, or simply another human whose gear you cannot vouch for.

The place most people actually meet this decision is a WhatsApp voice note someone needs outside WhatsApp. First get the file off the phone: forward or share the message to yourself, save it to Files or Downloads, or open WhatsApp Web or Desktop and download it from there. Some concrete sizes help. Uncompressed WAV runs roughly 10 MB per minute at CD quality. MP3 at 320 kbps is roughly 2.4 MB per minute. And Opus at typical voice note rates, 16 to 32 kbps, works out to roughly 120 to 240 KB per minute. That last number is the reason messaging apps adopted it: a long voice message stays small enough to send quickly on a weak connection, and the speech still comes through clearly. For music, the same efficiency means Opus can run at a lower bitrate than MP3 and land at the same perceived quality.
