Why convert M4A to AIFF?

AIFF is Apple's uncompressed PCM format, the same audio a WAV holds but wrapped in an Apple container with big-endian byte order. Reach for it when a Mac session wants PCM rather than the AAC inside your M4A: importing a voice memo or an Apple Music export into Logic Pro, dropping a track into an older iTunes workflow, or handing audio to a Mac app that expects AIFF. It carries metadata too, so your track and artist names ride along instead of getting stripped on the way in.

Quality and file size

Converting to AIFF does not undo the lossy AAC compression already baked into your M4A. What you get is a faithful, uncompressed PCM copy of that exact audio, not a restored or higher quality version, so treat this as a container change rather than an upgrade. Expect the file to grow, roughly 10 MB per minute at CD quality, which is many times the size of the AAC you started with. That heft is the point: an uncompressed, edit-ready file that Logic Pro and other Mac tools handle without re-decoding on every playback.

Why convert M4A to AIFF instead of just using the M4A?

Some Mac workflows prefer uncompressed PCM. Importing into Logic Pro, feeding an older iTunes setup, or handing audio to a Mac app that expects AIFF are the usual reasons. AIFF drops in as plain PCM with no AAC decode step.

Does converting to AIFF improve the quality?

No. Your M4A is already lossy AAC, and AIFF preserves it exactly as it is without recovering any detail the encoder discarded. You gain an uncompressed, Mac-friendly file, not better sound.

How big will the AIFF be?

Around 10 MB per minute at CD quality, many times larger than the compressed M4A. That size is normal for uncompressed PCM and is the tradeoff for an edit-ready file.

Is anything sent to a server?

No. The whole conversion runs in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file stays on your device and is never uploaded, stored, or used to train anything.
