Why convert M4A to OGG?

OGG Vorbis is the default sound format across a lot of open-source software and game development. Unity and Godot both read Ogg for music and effects, so converting M4A to OGG is common when you are dropping AAC audio into a game project. It also fits open-source apps and Linux setups where Ogg is the natural choice over patent-encumbered formats. At a matched bitrate Vorbis often equals or beats MP3 on quality while staying royalty-free. The trade-off is consumer hardware and Apple devices, which support OGG less reliably than MP3 or M4A, so keep it for software that specifically asks for Ogg.

Quality and file size

M4A and OGG are both lossy, so this is a transcode, and re-encoding already-lossy AAC into Vorbis adds a small generation loss. To keep it clean, pick a higher quality setting (around 256 kbps or more) and avoid bouncing the same file between lossy formats over and over. Vorbis is efficient, so at a matched bitrate it holds up well, often as well as MP3 or better. Your OGG stays roughly the same size as the M4A. It will not sound better than the source, so treat this as a format change for compatibility, not a quality step.

Why convert M4A to OGG at all?

Does the OGG lose quality compared to the M4A?

Will OGG play on my phone or in my car?

Support is spottier than MP3 or M4A, especially on Apple devices and car stereos. Keep OGG for game projects and software that asks for it, and use MP3 for general playback.
