Why convert OGG to AAC?
OGG Vorbis is common in games, open-source software and some web audio, but Apple devices and many car and hardware players do not play it. AAC is supported natively across Apple's ecosystem and most modern hardware. Convert when an OGG file will not open on your phone, in Apple Music, or in a device that only lists AAC and MP3. If your player already handles OGG, there is no need to switch.
Quality and file size
OGG Vorbis and AAC are both lossy, so this is a transcode that adds a little generation loss to what the OGG already discarded. AAC cannot restore that lost detail, so the result will not sound better than the source. Choose 256 or 320 kbps to keep the extra loss inaudible. The AAC will be roughly similar in size to the OGG at a comparable bitrate. Convert from a lossless original instead whenever you have one.
OGG to AAC: common questions
Will the AAC sound as good as my OGG?
Very close at 256 or 320 kbps, but not identical, since this re-encodes already-lossy audio. Most listeners will not hear a difference. The benefit is being able to play it on devices that reject OGG.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device, and we never see it, store it, or train on it.
Why won't my iPhone play OGG files?
Apple does not include OGG Vorbis playback in its built-in apps. Converting to AAC or M4A gives you a format every Apple device plays natively, with no extra app needed.
Should I choose AAC or M4A?
M4A for general use, because it adds tags and cover art around the same AAC audio. Choose raw .aac only if a particular system or device asks for it.
