Why convert WAV to AAC?
A WAV bounce is perfect for mixing and mastering but heavy to send or store, often around ten megabytes per minute of stereo audio. AAC keeps the sound close to the original at a fraction of that size, and it plays natively on iPhones, Macs, most Android devices and many car systems. Convert when you want to share a mix, load music onto a phone, or deliver to a platform that asks for AAC. Keep the WAV as your master.
Quality and file size
This is a single lossy encode from a clean lossless source, which is the best case for any lossy format. At 256 kbps AAC is widely considered transparent for most listeners on most material, and it generally sounds better than MP3 at the same bitrate. The file will be dramatically smaller than the WAV. Remember the AAC is a delivery copy: go back to the WAV for any further editing, because every later re-encode of the AAC adds loss.
WAV to AAC: common questions
Is AAC better than MP3 for converting a WAV?
At the same bitrate AAC usually sounds a little better, especially below 192 kbps, because it is the more efficient codec. At 320 kbps both are very close. Choose AAC for Apple devices and modern players, MP3 when you need the widest possible compatibility.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device, and we never see it, store it, or train on it.
Should I pick AAC or M4A?
Choose M4A for almost everything. It holds the same AAC audio but also stores tags and cover art. Only choose raw .aac when a broadcast system, device, or upload spec specifically asks for it.
Will I lose quality?
Some, because AAC is lossy, but at 256 or 320 kbps the difference from the WAV is inaudible to most people on most material. Keep the WAV as your master so you always have the lossless original.
