Why convert FLAC to MP3?
FLAC sounds great and archives perfectly, but the files are big and some gear still will not play them. Older car stereos, cheap Bluetooth speakers, and a few upload or streaming tools want plain MP3. Converting gives you one file that works on every phone, browser, DAW, and CD player. Quality and file size
This conversion re-encodes the audio with libmp3lame and drops some data to shrink the file, so the MP3 ends up smaller than the FLAC it came from. At 320 kbps the difference is inaudible to most listeners, while lower bitrates like 128 kbps save more space at a real cost to quality. Pick 320 or 256 kbps for music you care about. Keep the original FLAC as your master, since converting an MP3 back later cannot rebuild the detail that was discarded.
FLAC to MP3: common questions
Will the MP3 sound as good as the FLAC?
At 320 kbps most people cannot hear a difference, though MP3 does discard some data to save space. For critical listening or future edits, keep your FLAC as the master and treat the MP3 as a copy for sharing and playback.
What bitrate should I choose?
320 kbps for the best quality, 256 kbps for a good balance, and 128 kbps only when small size matters more than fidelity. A higher bitrate means a larger file.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser using FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your FLAC never leaves your device, and we never see it, store it, or train on it.
Why is the MP3 so much smaller than the FLAC?
FLAC keeps every bit of the original audio, while MP3 compresses by removing detail your ears are least likely to notice. That trade is what makes MP3s small and easy to share.
