Why convert FLAC to OPUS?
FLAC is the format people archive in, and for good reason: it is bit-perfect and carries rich tags. A lossless library is heavy to carry around, though, and Opus is the codec built for exactly this trade. It leads the other lossy formats at low and medium bitrates, so a converted collection sounds excellent at a fraction of the size. People convert FLAC to Opus to fit years of albums on a phone, to share tracks over Discord or a chat app, or to keep a slim listening copy on a laptop while the archive stays on a backup drive. One caution before you commit: older car stereos, some portable players, and a few DAWs do not open .opus files, so check your gear first.
Quality and file size
You are trading a perfect copy for a small one, and the trade is honest as long as you know the terms. Opus at 192 kbps or higher is extremely hard to tell apart from the FLAC original for most listeners on most music. The discarded detail never comes back, though, so keep the FLAC files as your archive and treat the Opus copies as disposable. If you re-encode later at a different bitrate, always start from the FLAC, never from an earlier Opus. That habit avoids stacking lossy generations.

Should I delete my FLAC files after converting?
We recommend keeping them. FLAC is your perfect archive and Opus is the portable copy, so holding onto the FLAC lets you regenerate Opus at any bitrate later. Deleting it makes the loss permanent.
How close does Opus get to lossless?
At 160 to 192 kbps, close enough that most listeners cannot tell the two apart on most music. It is still a lossy format, so some data is discarded no matter the bitrate.
Is my music library uploaded during conversion?
No. Everything runs inside your browser using FFmpeg in WebAssembly. Your library never leaves your computer, and nothing is stored on our side because nothing ever reaches us.
Why not convert FLAC to MP3 instead?
MP3 wins on compatibility with old hardware, but at the same file size Opus sounds better, especially at lower bitrates. If your players support .opus, it is the stronger choice; if you need to feed an aging car stereo, MP3 remains the safe one.
