Why convert AAC to MP3?
Raw .aac files often come out of broadcast recorders, stream captures, some Android apps and radio workflows, and plenty of players and editors do not open them cleanly. MP3 is the one format that works on essentially every phone, browser, DAW and car head unit. Convert when an AAC file will not open, will not import into your editor, or needs to go to someone whose setup you do not know.
Quality and file size
Both formats are lossy, so this is a transcode: the AAC is decoded and re-encoded as MP3, adding a small amount of generation loss. AAC is the more efficient codec, so match or exceed the original bitrate to avoid audible degradation. Choosing 320 kbps keeps the result very close to the source for most listeners. Avoid repeatedly converting between lossy formats, since each pass loses a little more.

Why won't my .aac file open?
Raw AAC has no container, so some players and editors do not recognise it even though they play AAC inside M4A. Converting to MP3 gives you a file that essentially every app accepts.
Is my file uploaded anywhere?
No. The conversion runs entirely in your browser with FFmpeg compiled to WebAssembly. Your file never leaves your device, and we never see it, store it, or train on it.
Will the MP3 sound worse than the AAC?
A little, technically, because you are re-encoding lossy audio. At 320 kbps most people cannot hear a difference. The trade is worth it for MP3's universal playback.
What bitrate should I pick?
320 kbps is the safe choice for music. Because AAC is more efficient than MP3, dropping far below the original's bitrate is where you would start to hear the difference.
